Making an Impact: Sustainable Innovation
As a leader in helping the world sustainably move, improve and enjoy water, life’s most essential resource, Pentair believes that making life better for people and the planet is essential. Product innovation is core to Pentair’s business to deliver smart, sustainable water solutions to create a better world.
With the global water and climate challenges facing our world today, it is essential that we innovate to address sustainability needs with solutions requiring less energy and water to operate and reduce environmental impact across the product life cycle. As we focus on addressing this ongoing challenge, earlier this year more than 100 product and project managers, product developers and engineers from our three business segments came together for a first-of-its-kind innovation event – the Sustainability Innovation Challenge.

Led by our Sustainability and Innovation teams, this initiative focused on training and ideation workshops, where our global teams generated over 500 ideas to help reduce environmental impact throughout the life cycle of our products. Teams also learned how to use new processes and tools to evaluate and refine their ideas to increase impact. It was inspiring to see the teams come together to collaborate and think about sustainability differently and how to drive our efforts for sustainable product design forward in new and innovative ways.
Additionally, the Sustainability Innovation Challenge supports our efforts toward “Product Design for Sustainability,” one of our five Social Responsibility Strategic Targets to advance the positive impact of our business. We are proud of our progress including the creation of a product sustainability scorecard which is integrated as a standard component in our product commercialization process. In 2022 and 2023, 100 percent of new Pentair products were assessed with the product sustainability scorecard across five impacts from a product’s life cycle including water use, energy use, GHG emissions, resource use efficiency, and material health.
I’m excited by the momentum coming out of the Sustainability Innovation Challenge and for us to continue to advance product design to drive value for our customers while positively impacting the Pentair business, people and the planet.
