Most Frequently Asked Questions
Finding the right pump shouldn't be a struggle - here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about utility pumps to help find the right pump for you.
-
Do I need a submersible or non-submersible pump?
-
Most utility pumps are submersible but Pentair offers a pump that can be used with a suction and discharge hose to avoid putting the pump in the water.
-
What is the required flow rate?
-
Choose a pump with a flow rate based on the size of the space you are removing water. The higher the flow rate, the faster you will remove the unwanted water. Most Pentair Utility Pumps can remove 1,000 gallons per hour or more.
-
How far am I trying to move the water?
-
Select a pump that can lift the water as far as you need. If you are lifting water out of a basement, you will need a pump that can lift at least 10 feet. Keep in mind that the pump will have to move the water until gravity can take control and drain the water away from your home.
-
What material should I choose?
-
The most common materials are thermoplastic, stainless steel or a non-corrosive material like an engineered alloy.
-
Can a utility pump be completely submerged under water?
-
Most utility pumps are submersible but not all. Be sure to confirm the unit you are purchasing is submersible. Even on a submersible unit, be sure to keep the electrical plug out of the water.
-
What kind of hose or pipe is best to use for discharge from this pump?
-
It is best to use a hose that is the same size as (or larger than) the pump's discharge connection. Most Pentair Utility Pumps include a garden hose adapter or will work with a standard sump/utility discharge hose kit.
-
Can I use an extension cord to plug in a utility pump?
-
Pentair recommends the pump be plugged directly into an outlet. If you MUST use an extension cord, it needs to be heavy enough gauge and short enough length so the pump receives full voltage and power.
-
Can I use an accessory like a spray handle that shuts off the flow with a utility pump?
-
No. Utility pumps are designed to move water without limiting the flow. Blocking the discharge can cause damage to the pump.
-
Will a utility pump shut off by itself when the water is gone?
-
Most utility pumps are designed to be ran manually, meaning you should be there to unplug the pump when the water is removed. There is not an automatic shut off like a sump pump with a float switch. Pentair offers premium, automatic utility pumps that operate on their own.
-
Can a utility pump handle dirt & debris?
-
Most utility pumps are designed to pump clear, clean water with very small fractional solids being passed. Debris can block the intake/suction causing the pump to be starved for water. Large debris inside the pump can cause damage to the pump.
-
Is there a fuse inside a utility pump?
-
It has a thermal cutoff that will stop the motor if it is overheating. However, that will reset itself when the motor cools down.
-
Can I pump anything other than water with a utility pump?
-
It is recommended to only pump clear, fresh water with a utility pump.
-
Do I need to register my Pentair pump for warranty?
-
No. The pump is covered under warranty from the date of purchase. You can return the product to the retailer you purchased the product from or call Pentair customer service.
