Reflections on Dr. Martin Luther King's Legacy

Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who devoted his life to advancing equality, social justice, and opportunity for all. It is fitting that in 1994, the U.S. Congress designated the holiday as a national day of volunteer service. At Pentair, we encourage our employees to honor Dr. King’s legacy by taking time to not only reflect but also volunteer with organizations important to them.

For me, MLK Day is an opportunity for personal reflection and thankfulness. I think about those individuals who sacrificed and gave of themselves so that many of us may have freedoms, opportunities and experiences that previous generations did not have. Today, I also think even more about how I can continue to help move us forward in the journey started by Dr. King and so many others.

That is one reason that I am proud to serve as the executive sponsor of Pentair’s Black Employee Network (BEN), which works to strengthen and enhance the relationship of Pentair’s Black employees with each other and with the broader organization. Through networking and educational events, BEN strives to promote appreciation, understanding, and empathy for the Black experience while investing in the communities where we live and work.

I am also proud of the Pentair's efforts to mentor and show young people of color the significant possibilities for their future. This includes through initiatives like our partnership with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx to launch a new series of Career Development Training Camps for BIPOC students in the Twin Cities. Each session is designed to empower the students and provide them with the opportunity to hear actionable insights and from established professionals from Pentair and the Timberwolves and Lynx.

These efforts are examples of how Pentair and our employees are embracing Dr. King’s legacy to build unity, equity, and inclusivity within our culture and communities.
